On Being Black In America

“Racism diminishes the humanity of anybody who buys into it, of anybody who buys into a lie, of anybody who buys into a facade. Being an anti-racist is not only about removing the barriers and the systems and the ideologies that harm Black folk, it’s also about white folk gaining more humanity, more of their self, more of that freedom, more liberty from the thing that is alive that we have been told to believe. Tackling racism starts with each of us. We have to do the work to understand our own biases, prejudices and racist beliefs. This starts with letting go of the need to be a good person or to be right.”
